G.M Lingaraju was born on August 15th, 1968 in Chitradurga, Karnataka. His parents are renowned agriculturalist, businessman and politician G Mallikarjunappa and Halamma, who was a housewife. He is the youngest among 7 siblings (4 sisters and 3 brothers) He completed his schooling in Janaseva Vidya Kendra and later enrolled in Mysore University to pursue B.Com. He was interested in basketball, swimming and hockey during his school and college days.
During his schooling, he lent a helping hand to his father, G Mallikarjunappa in business and agricultural activities. For 3 years after he graduated, he assisted in various agricultural activities in Bheemasamudra, Karnataka.
In the year 1999, he joined his family business of trading in various by-products of arecanut. He spearheaded plans to expand and create employment and opportunities for the local community of Davanagere where jobs were scarce due to cotton industries shutting down.
He founded Srishyla Educational Trust in 2000, to provide equal opportunities for children belonging to all strata of the society by providing concessions, scholarships and assistance. In 2001, he founded the prestigious GM Institute of Technology, Davanagere with the aim of imparting education and encourage development of skills in students of backward classes.
In 2005, he later entered the real estate sector and dealt with development of commercial buildings all across Bangalore. He solely responsible for the establishment of wind mills in Maharashtra and Karnataka in the year 2007. The following year he took over a Sugar and Energy industry (a sick industry at that time) and turned it into the profitable industry that it is today.
